An Iconic Home Gets a Timeless Upgrade

When it comes to home renovations, every project has its own unique challenges. However, when the home is nearly a century old and was designed by a famous architect, the responsibility of maintaining the historic character of the home while modernizing the functionality is especially daunting. Breckyn Jackson, principal at BMA Designs in Athens, Georgia, embraced the opportunity to celebrate the unique features of the home while integrating modern elements with timeless appeal.

BMA Designs has been redefining interior spaces since 2010. Their signature style, characterized by layers of luxurious textiles and natural materials, creates sophisticated and inviting environments.

The Costa-Erwin-Mayfield House in Athens, Georgia, was designed by renowned architect Fred Orr and built in 1929. It is considered a masterpiece of the Spanish Colonial Revival Style and features a stucco-and-brick exterior accented with decorative tiles and a tower.  BMA Designs was hired to upgrade the kitchen with the goal of enlarging it to be more functional while maintaining style continuity with the rest of the house.

The BMA design team carefully selected materials and finishes that complemented the home’s original architecture. The kitchen now features stunning hardware from Jeffrey Alexander including Elara knobs, Dominique pulls, and Sutton pulls in Satin Bronze and Sullivan knobs in Brushed Pewter.

“We are loving sculptural/artistic hardware, mixed metals, and customizable options,” said Breckyn. “These trends show a step towards personalization, quality materials, and hardware that acts as both a functional and decorative element in design.”

The unique challenges of the Costa-Erwin-Mayfield House encouraged BMA Designs to embrace mixed finishes while keeping functionality and comfort at the forefront of the design. Choosing larger pulls for drawers and cabinets improves functionality and ease of access. Durability is also an important factor when choosing decorative hardware. “The Jeffrey Alexander line offers high-quality hardware at a reasonable price point, making it a perfect fit for our clients,” said Brecklyn.
